Kitchen Countertop Installation

Install day is the shortest part of a kitchen countertop installation, often just a few hours. The weeks before it are what decide whether the stone sits flat and the seams disappear.

It starts with the cabinets. Stone does not bend, so every base cabinet has to be level and in the same plane before anyone measures. If one box is low, the slab can rock or crack the first time someone leans on it.

Next comes the template. The fabricator traces every wall, corner and cutout on site, including the sink, the cooktop and the faucet holes. The slab is cut in the shop from that template, not from a drawing, so the fit matches your real walls.

Then we coordinate the trades. The plumber needs to know the sink model, the electrician needs to know where outlets land in the backsplash, and the dishwasher opening needs a support rail. Getting those details right keeps install day short.

If you are replacing more than the counters, our kitchen remodeler services cover cabinets, lighting and layout too.

Below you will find what countertops cost, how the main materials compare and how a slab actually gets set.

What Countertop Installation Costs

Most kitchen countertop installation is priced by the square foot, with the material, fabrication and install bundled together.

Installed quartz often runs about $50 to $150 a square foot, with premium brands reaching about $200. Granite runs about $40 to $130 for common colors and up to about $250 for rare stone. Solid surface lands around $40 to $110, and butcher block around $35 to $120.

A typical kitchen has about 40 square feet of counter. At those prices, most kitchens land somewhere around $2,000 to $10,000, depending on the material and the edges you choose.

A few things move the number: the number of seams, sink and cooktop cutouts, thicker or mitered edges, full height backsplashes and tearing out old counters. We list each one on your estimate.

Quartz, Granite, Butcher Block or Solid Surface

The material you pick affects your countertop installation as much as your budget, from the weight of the slab to how you care for it later.

Quartz is made from crushed stone and resin. It does not need sealing, resists stains and comes in even, consistent patterns. The resin can be damaged by very hot pans, so trivets are a good habit, and it is not the best pick outdoors because strong sun can fade it.

Granite is natural stone, so every slab is different. It handles heat well and holds up for decades, but it needs sealing now and then to keep spills from soaking in.

Butcher block is warm, quiet and easy to repair with a light sand. It needs oil a few times a year and extra care around the sink. Solid surface is smooth with no visible seams and can be repaired too, but it scratches and scorches more easily than stone.

We help you weigh looks, upkeep and price before you pick a slab.

How a Slab Gets Set

Gravity does most of the work in a stone countertop installation, but the details are what keep it from moving.

We check that every cabinet is level and add plastic shims where needed. Then a bead of 100 percent silicone goes along the top rail of each cabinet. When the stone sets down, the silicone compresses and locks it in place so it cannot slide.

Seams get filled with two part epoxy tinted to match the stone. The two pieces are pulled tight and level with seam clamps while the epoxy cures, which keeps the joint thin and smooth.

The dishwasher opening gets a support rail across the front, since there is no cabinet under that part of the stone. Undermount sinks are hung with clips and epoxy, then sealed with silicone.

Once the counters are set, the plumber hooks up the sink and faucet, and the backsplash can go up.

Edges, Overhangs and Seating

Edges and overhangs are the last design choices in a kitchen countertop installation, and they change both the look and the safety of the stone.

A standard counter edge hangs about 1 to 1.5 inches past the cabinet. For seating at a 36 inch counter, plan on about 12 to 15 inches of overhang so knees fit underneath. At a 42 inch bar, about 10 to 12 inches works.

How far stone can hang without support depends on the material and thickness. Thick 3 cm granite is often limited to about 8 to 10 inches unsupported, and thinner 2 cm granite to about 6 inches. Some quartz brands allow more. Past those limits, we add steel brackets, corbels or legs.

For edges, a simple eased edge looks clean and costs the least. Bullnose and ogee edges add a softer or more classic look. A mitered edge makes the counter look like one thick slab.

FAQ

Countertop Installation Questions

These are the questions we hear most before a countertop installation.

How much does countertop installation cost in Golden?

Most installed countertops run about $40 to $150 a square foot, and more for premium quartz or rare granite. A typical kitchen has about 40 square feet of counter, so most jobs land around $2,000 to $10,000. These are national ranges. Your price depends on the material, edges, seams and cutouts, and we give you a written number after a free walkthrough.

Is quartz or granite better for a kitchen?

Both are great choices. Quartz does not need sealing, resists stains and has an even look, but very hot pans can damage it and it can fade in strong sun. Granite is natural stone, handles heat well and every slab is one of a kind, but it needs sealing now and then. Many families pick quartz for easy care and granite for heat and a natural look.

Do granite countertops need to be glued down?

Mostly, the weight of the stone holds it in place. Installers still run a bead of silicone along the top of each cabinet so the slab cannot slide or shift. Seams between pieces are filled with color matched epoxy, which holds the pieces tight together.

How is a granite countertop attached to cabinets?

The cabinets are leveled first, with plastic shims where needed. A bead of 100 percent silicone goes along the top rails of each cabinet, and the slab is set on top. Seams are joined with tinted epoxy, a support rail goes across the dishwasher opening, and long overhangs get steel brackets or corbels.
