Kitchen Remodeling
Ask anyone what room they would change first, and a kitchen remodel is almost always the answer.
It is where breakfast gets made, homework gets done and guests end up standing no matter how nice the living room is. When the kitchen is cramped, dark or falling apart, the whole house feels it.
The signs are easy to spot. Cabinet doors sag on their hinges. There is nowhere to set down a bag of groceries. Two people cannot pass each other at the sink, and the only outlet is behind the toaster.
A full remodel fixes all of that at once. We start with how you use the room, then plan the layout, storage and lighting around it. After that come the cabinets, counters, backsplash and floors.
Kitchens are a big part of our work as a remodeler, along with basements, bathrooms and whole house projects.
Below you will find what the work costs, where the money goes, what needs a permit and how long the work takes.
What a Kitchen Remodel Costs
Permit records give a good look at what a kitchen remodel really costs around Denver.
One cost study of more than 9,000 Denver kitchen permits from 2021 to early 2026 found an average of about $34,780. That average mixes light refreshes with full gut jobs, and many projects run past $60,000.
National numbers line up the same way. A minor update, like painting or refacing cabinets and new counters in the same layout, often costs about $4,000 to $18,000. A mid range remodel with semi custom cabinets, new appliances, counters, floors and lighting often runs about $15,000 to $50,000.
Changing the layout is what pushes a kitchen into the high end. Moving walls, plumbing, gas or electrical, with custom cabinets and luxury finishes, often costs $50,000 to $70,000 or more. Moving plumbing and gas lines by themselves can add about $5,000 to $15,000.
Where the Budget Goes
Cabinets take the biggest bite of almost every kitchen remodel budget.
National cost guides put cabinets at about a quarter to a third of the total. Appliances and labor each take around 15 percent. Counters and backsplash take about 10 percent, and flooring about 7 percent. Lighting, paint, drywall, the sink and faucet make up most of the rest.
That breakdown shows where you can save. Keeping the same layout avoids the cost of moving pipes and wires. Refacing sturdy cabinet boxes costs less than replacing them. Picking a mid range counter and spending more on the island top puts the money where people look.
Set aside 10 to 15 percent for surprises, too. Old wiring, a leak under the sink or a sagging floor joist can show up once the old cabinets come out.
Permits for a Kitchen Remodel
Whether a kitchen remodel needs a permit depends on what moves.
Under the city's building guide, swapping out cabinets and countertops does not need a permit. Neither does replacing a sink or faucet in the same spot, changing light fixtures or switches, or putting in new flooring.
A permit is needed once the work goes deeper. Moving the sink, adding a gas line for a new range, adding circuits or outlets, and moving or removing walls all need one. A full remodel also goes through plan review, which the city aims to finish in about 15 working days for homes.
We handle the drawings, the permit and every inspection. That way the work behind your walls is checked before it gets covered up.
Kitchen Trends for 2026
Each year a national survey of kitchen designers shows where a kitchen remodel is headed, and 2026 leans warm and simple.
Transitional style leads the list, mixing clean lines with a few classic details. Wood grain cabinets are gaining on painted ones, and white oak is the top pick. Flat slab doors and panel fronts that hide the fridge and dishwasher are on the rise.
Neutrals are still the most popular colors, with greens and blues close behind. Designers say the bold color goes on the island, the backsplash or the wallpaper rather than every cabinet. Quartzite is catching up to quartz on counters.
The room is also doing more jobs. Coffee and drink stations, pet feeding spots, bigger pantries and floor to ceiling storage top the wish lists, along with better task lighting and stronger vent hoods.
How Long the Work Takes
Most families want to know how long a kitchen remodel will leave them without a working stove.
An average remodel often takes about 6 to 9 weeks of work. Larger projects with layout changes, custom cabinets or moved plumbing can take 3 to 5 months once you count permits, ordering and building.
Ordering is the part people forget. Custom cabinets and stone counters can take weeks to arrive, so we place those orders early and plan demo around the delivery dates.
We also help you set up a temporary kitchen in another room, with the fridge, microwave and coffee maker plugged in, so daily life keeps moving while the work gets done.

Kitchen Remodeling Questions
These are the questions we hear most before we start on a kitchen.
What is a realistic budget for a kitchen remodel?
Around Denver, kitchen permits average about $34,780, but that mixes small and large jobs. Nationally, a full remodel that keeps the same layout often runs about $15,000 to $50,000. Changing the layout with custom cabinets and high end finishes often costs $50,000 to $70,000 or more. Add 10 to 15 percent for surprises.
Is $10,000 enough for a kitchen remodel?
$10,000 usually covers a partial update rather than a full remodel. It can pay for painting or refacing cabinets plus new counters in a small kitchen. A full remodel of even a small 8 by 10 foot kitchen often starts around $12,000, and most mid range remodels cost much more.
What is the new look for kitchens in 2026?
Kitchen designers point to warm, simple rooms for 2026. Transitional style leads, with wood grain cabinets in white oak, flat slab doors and panel fronts that hide the fridge and dishwasher. Neutrals are still the top colors, with greens and blues close behind, and quartzite is gaining on quartz for counters.
What is the most expensive part of redoing a kitchen?
Cabinets are usually the biggest cost, taking about a quarter to a third of the budget. Appliances and labor come next. Moving the layout can add a lot too, since relocating plumbing and gas lines alone can add about $5,000 to $15,000.
